  • The advertisement stated

    “Lar Corbetts & Coppingers
    www.coppingersbar.ie

Bring a Bus for a free bar
    GOOD FRIDAY

    Music with Graham @ 5 and Caley @ 9
    €1.99

    Good Friday
    Guinness €1.99… see more

The advertisement also featured a caricature image that resembled Jesus surrounded by a pint glass, a can and another glass. He is holding a pint of beer in one hand and giving a thumbs up with the other. A speech bubble stated “Thank God its Good Friday. Pubs open lets celebrate.”

Like Tag & Share to win a free bar.”

  • The complainant said she had two issues with the poster.

    Issue 1

She said she felt it was promoting alcohol in a way that could be harmful i.e. it stated bring a bus for a free bar and the price of the drinks were so low.

    Issue 2

She said she was a Catholic and was highly offended by the picture of Our Lord holding a pint. She said she felt the advertisement was both dangerous and insulting.

  • The advertisers failed to provide a response to the complaint.

  • Complaint Upheld.

The Complaints Committee considered the detail of the complaint and the advertisers’ response. The Complaints Committee expressed concern at the advertisers’ failure to respond to the complaint. They reminded them that there is an onus on advertisers to ensure that their advertising is in conformity with the Code.

In the absence of a response from Lar Corbett & Coppingers, the Committee concluded that the advertisement was in breach of Code sections 2.4c, 3.3, 3.10, 3.16, 3.17 and 9.4.

ACTION REQUIRED: The advertisement should not be used in the same format again.
